Abstract

The struggle to accommodate ethnic and religious differences amongst its people is arguably Nigerias biggest problem today. This paper employs the social identity theory to explore the bear upon of ethnicity and organized religion on the emergence of a true national identity in Nigeria. The fundamental thesis of this paper is that political mobilization drawn along ethno-religious lines has undermined the sense of national identity in Nigeria. The paper draws on colonial policies with a view to assessing the historical processes that have nurtured deep divides in the Nigerian society and suggesting options for intervention.

Peace Research is published at Menno Simons College, a College of Canadian Mennonite Academy affiliated with and situated on the campus of the Academy of Winnipeg.  Menno Simons College provides education flowing from Anabaptist Mennonite understandings of faith, peace, and justice while engaging other religious traditions and intellectual perspectives.  Kinesthesia members hold advanced degrees in peace and conflict studies, sociology, psychology, economics, history, political studies, anthropology, geography, religion, and social sciences. Through interdisciplinary programs in Conflict Resolution Studies and International Development Studies with a broad range of courses and practicum opportunities, Menno Simons College prepares students from diverse backgrounds for participation and leadership in local and global communities, with a goal to help promote peace and justice, convalesce conflict, discover new methods of equitable sustainable development, and fight oppression and marginalization.
